It's unbelievable but the small dots in this picture are actually people. |
These days, I'm attending an English academy to do some parliamentary debate. In fact, there are only two people in the class but we are pretending that there are enough people to do parliamentary debates. I started attending the academy last Friday. The topic was that 'This House Believes That Human Overpopulation Is A Global Crisis' and I was the Prime Minister. Here is my speech:
Ladies and gentlemen, because of the advancements in medication and increasing of food, global population is increasing over and over every year. According to Wikipedia, the world's population continued increasing after the Black Death of Europe. As of September 2012, the world population reaches 7.039 billion people and it will increase more and more as time passes by.Hello, my name is Eujin Jo and I'm the Prime Minister of the governement side. Today's topic is that 'This House Believes That Human Overpopulation Is A Global Crisis' and our team strongly supports the topic. That is because, first, many people all over the world are starving. Second, if the world population increases, crime rate will increase, too. And, finally, because of overpopulation, environmental problems are increasing these days.
Today, as the Prime Minister of the Government Side, I will give the split, define the terms and state the first three arguments of our team. Besides, the Deputy Prime Minister will state the other two arguments of our team and rebut some points of Leader of the Opposition. Lastly, our whip will rebut the points of the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and tell you the reason why our team definately win this Debate.
Now, I'd like to define the terms. I define the term 'overpopulation' as 'too many human beings living on the earth'. Also, I define the term 'crisis' to mean 'causing a lot of global problems such as some environmental problems and crimes'.
I'll state the first three arguments of our team from now on. First of all, many people all over the world are starving nowadays especially in Africa. That is mainly because we can not prduce enough foods for all the human biengs even if we are farming and cooking over and over. According to FAO, about 925 million people are starving or can not eat enough food. The earth is too small to feed every human being on it.
Moreover, if there are more people, there may be more crimes. It is an obvious fact and we can know it through the example of these two countries-America and Korea-. American population is more than 300 million. On the contrary, Korean population is only about 50 million. American crime rate is absolutely higher than Korean. In America, more than 1.2 million crimes are taking place every year while only 1082.0 crimes are occuring in Korea a year. This example tells us the fact that crime rate will increase if the global population increases and overpopulation will cause more serious crimes on the earth.
Third, overpopulation will cause several environmental problems and shortage of natural resources. 'More people' means 'more creatures which need fossil fuels, energy and food to live'. They make numerous trashes everyday and the trashes will pollute the earth. Moreover, the green house gasses and other pollutants from their cars and factories will result in more serious environmental problems which will cause a lot of disasters.
So far, I, as the Prime Minister, defined the terms, gave the split, and stated the three arguments of our team in detail. Ladies and gentlemen, somebody even said, "humans are 10 thousand times more common than we should be". Overpopulation is one of the most serious global problems these days and it will effect all the human beings on the earth. Thank you very much.
I think that this speech is a little bit better than the speeches I wrote during the GLPS. But my debate teacher who came from America said that I had some things to improve and change in the speech.
He said that I had to let the audience know about the specific associations and places I mentioned in my speech. As you can see in the speech, I cited one of the reports of FAO, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, but did not explain about the organization in detail. That was because I expected that almost every people all over the world might know the famous organization. However, the teacher said that I should not expect every people to know FAO but should explain about it during the debate. He also said that my second argument was not that logical. My second argument was that 'there would be more crimes if there were more people on the earth'. The teacher said that stating the argument was very similar to saying " if the counsumption of icecream increased in the summer, there would be more flies." Increasing of flies and icecream consumption are mainly because of hot weather. However, the two things themselves do not have any relationship. Likewise, even if increasing of crimes and people are because of the big size of the country, we can not say that they have a cause-and-effect relationship.
In fact, I did my second debate in the English academy yesterday night with a topic that 'This House Believes That Music, Movies And Video Games That Glorify Violent And Criminal Behaviours Should Be Banned' and I was the Leader of the Opposition this time. The speech for yesterday was much longer than the previous speech. I'll upload it later.
can i post rebuttals on your post for fun??
답글삭제Hi, Ho June. I'm very glad to read your comment on my post. Even though we were in the different classes during the camp, I remember you who got the Best Blogger Award in the closing ceremony. As for your suggestion, of course you can!!
삭제Rebuttal to the first argument: "There are too many Africans who are starving because of the overpopulation"
답글삭제There is PLENTY of food for feeding the Africans. Because of the prospering countries who have monopolized the food industry, the Africans do not have enough finance to self-supply the food. Instead of killing or eliminating the "surplus" of population, we must help Africans to prosper so that they can produce enough food to feed themselves.
Moreover, the reason that America has such a high crime rate is because fire arms in America are legalized to be personal properties. Instead of killing all those innocent people, we should enforce laws.
My Rebuttals To Yours:
삭제1. We can not expect the rich Western countries to distribute their food to the poor African people. Truth be told, we SHOULD not since all the human beings are very selfish. It is the basic instinct of every human beings. They work only for their benefit and their profit. Likewise, the presidents of the Western countries may not want to share their food with the poor countries since they are selected to work for THEIR countries and THEIR nations, not African people. Besides, even if the rich countries distribute some food to the African people, we can not say that all the Africans will be happier and everything will be fine since there are so many Africans and we can not make all of them live better lives.
2. If there are more human beings, the competition amongst the people may be more severe. People will struggle to eat enough food, find a nice workplace, earn a lot of money, live better lives and so on. As a result, some of them will commit crimes to get what they are hungry for-what I mentioned above- or release stress. Therefore, unlike you have stated, crime rate will be higher if global population increases.
Anyway, your rebuttals were very nice. I'm waiting for your rebuttal for my thrid argument.
Uh... so how are you going to get rid of the overpopulated people? Kill them all? Besides, if welfare policies are effectively operated, the people won't starve. For example, Japan has a lower crime rate than us, even though their population is triple of ours. You know why? Because Japanese education teaches their citizens to consistently respect the law and each other-that's why Japan's crime rate is 1~2%. (Their police has barely anything to do XD)
답글삭제Moreover, it's not the people that are destroying poor Mr. Earth-it's the oil companies and industrialized cities. If there were 10 billion people in the world and there was no factory, do you think that the pollution state would have been as severe as now? Green house emissions are released from the consistent operation of factories, not from a person.
Furthermore, I don't even expect the selfish Western countries to give African people all their food. I was trying to say that if we congregate together and cluster a certain amount of money and send it to Africa, the effect will not be dramatic but African citizens will be liberated from famine step by step.

삭제I recently read a book called The Mirror Of Cassendra written by a French writer. In the book, the main character, Cassendra, who had a magical power to predict the future had a horrible dream one day. In her dream, the future generations were trying her for not keeping her generation from bearing lots of babies and making the earth over populated. As we can notice through this novel, future generations will blame us for making earth too over populated (even if they can not try us).
You said that even if Japan is more populated than Korea, Japanese crime rate is lower than our's. However, I found that this evidence is entirely wrong. Because, Korean peninsula is smaller than Japanese. We should compare the two countries' 'population densities'. Korean population density is 479.3/km2 while Japanese is 315/1km2. Therefore,Korea, which is more populated, has higher crime rate.
You also mentioned that big companies and industrial countries, not the Africans, are polluting our planet. However, the African people are also responsible for destroying the earth. Even if they are poor, they may buy some stuffs-toothpaste, clothes, pencils, instant foods, cigarets, and so on-. Can we make toothpaste by ourselves? Can we make cigarets by ourselves? No, the stuffs are all made in huge factories. You said that factories are releasing green house gasses. That's right. And the factories are producing pollutants because PEOPLE need the stuffs they produced. Therefore, overpopulation will cause serious environmental problems, as I mentioned.
I entered your blog and read your posts a few days ago. They were totally amazing! I was fascinated by your writings, especially the Joseph Kony essays. I'm glad to see your post after the GLPS camp and hope that I can read your new essays ASAP! Moreover, I'll post more debate scripts so please share your ideas about the topics, as well.
삭제what does population density have to do with this? The information in your speech stated that MORE POPULATION = MORE CRIME RATES.
답글삭제There wasn't a single world about population density.
Furthermore, of course we NEED the goods like food and pencils.
But the problem is that there ARE TOO MUCH- THEY ARE PRODUCED MORE THAN NECESSARY. Means that overproduction is causing the pollution, not plain pollution.
You still did not answer my question.
답글삭제How are you going to get ride of the extra overpopulation?
